BUSINESS: Finding clients/work: This one is hunch based but it's probably a potential tip that you won't find anywhere else. I've been scanning the phrase "any podcast recommendations" on Twitter for my Podcast Review Day community for a few weeks now. I'https://hotpodnews.com/the-radio-listserv-in-2020/m trying to figure out how to match podcast listeners looking for podcasts with podcasters looking for listeners. And there's a lot going on there. One of the things going on, other than looking for actual podcast recommendations, are people looking for podcast editors, podcast hosts and more. You can't follow a search term on Twitter like you can on Instagram but I wonder how fruitful it would be to use an advanced search with this term to hone in on the folks looking for podcast editors. I'm mentioning this because no matter what planned client outreach I do, the people that find me are coming from social media spaces where I've been engaging with people, not promoting my work explicitly. Food for thought. Let me know if it works for you. Build community: Radio Listservs I've got a few listservs on our podcast editing communities list and get updates from even more on a daily basis. They're such an interesting insight into media and for me and I'm meeting the most random people. In fact, I was contacted by a major news agency this week about an Afghanistan refugee news items connected to where I live in Albania. I'd put my name and country I'm living with on the international media list that's from one of these groups months ago but forgot about it. Funny thing was, I did have a local media contact to connect them to. What I'm saying is, these are a great way to make connections. Globally. This article goes into more detail and gives some more examples. If you know of any that are NOT on our list, please let me know. Thanks. TIP: We've got a list of other podcast editing communities that's updated monthly. Hit REPLY to get the current version anytime. RECORDING: Where to plug your headphones into I don't like to hear my voice when recording so I intentionally plug them into my computer, not my mic. I asked and then ranted about this a bit in some podcast groups this week because this seems to be one of those "shoulds." It doesn't have to be. If you know your voice well enough and the output is consistenty good, you do NOT have to do this. I wanna kick back on the "shoulds" a little bit more. Maybe that should be a section of the newsletter.
CONTENT EDITING: 3 levels of editing
If I had a dime for every time someone quotes Tom Webster of Edison Research after his keynotes, I'd be well rich indeed. I nearly jumped out of my seat during Podcast Movement recently when he talked about the 3 stages of editing. 1. not editing them 2. removing the ums and uhs 3. mastering your craft Here's what he said about #3:
"Pick a show of yours and get a transcript, did an ugly uncorrected transcript of it and read it. And experience true horror. No. I'm right.
Edit that transcript. And then do the show like that. Or edit the show to be like that. Right. And there's a number of reasons for this. And I'm not here to tell you that your podcasts have to be short. I'm telling you that all of them could be a little bit shorter. And not for time purposes. But for clarity." Thoughts? DAW DISCOVERIES: reduce silence capability
I read about Audacity's ability to reduce silence abilities and I know that Descript has this function to (you can even specify how long of silences you want shortened in Descript), but now I wonder: How many other DAWs have this ability? I'm using Hindenburg, which does not. But I'm always eyeing other DAWs to hop to after I've learned heaps with my current one. So if you know, please let me know. I'll make a list and put it in the next issue of the newsletter. Thanks.
DAW TIMESAVER: editing templates
Simple Podcast Editing's new podcast format is out and I'm SO happy with it. Jason Whissell of Made You A Mixtape is our first guest and he's talking about podcast templates. It's available in 2 formats: -the edited podcast is 9:45 -Unedited YouTube video, with some editing tangents, is 41:38 both can be found here: https://www.stephfuccio.com/simplepodcastediting/6 AUDIO NEWS: Transom
They've got a new newsletter!

SOUND CONSIDERATIONS: AudioHero
One of my podcast editing heroes is Carrie Caufield Arick had an amazing tip that she posted in Just Busters recently. She approved me talking about it in the newsletter so here goes: "I had a client record an episode of an Amtrack train. Nothing made it sound okay. So, in a last-ditch effort to fix it, I downloaded some interior and exterior train ambiance from AudioHero to lay underneath the original audio. It freaking worked." (((bowing)))). Carrie, you're a genius!
PODCAST HOSTING: RedCircle Did some research recently for this piece for The Podcast Host and I've gotta say, I wish more people knew about RedCircle. If I wasn't so invested in Captivate FM already, I would try them out for sure.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Bursting at the seams I'm not going to lie, I'm exhausted. All aspects of my podcast life have exploded in really amazing ways in the past 2 months. I was stagnating for 8 or 9 months and then the flood dams burst. Wide open. The set up and busy aspect is stronger than the monetary component but both are increasing. Thank goodness. I'm now:
still doing my Hindy tutoring once a month. I've made massive progress and don't need weekly help anymore. Hurrah. going to the Podcast Academy's Show Notes Summit on August 28th. It's free for Academy members and $9+up for non-members. I'm going to start offering this as a service soon to my editing clients, so this is perfect timing. doing calls with folks who want to client-share (I don't like doing launches but am hearing potential clients that want them). So I'm looking for people who do launches BUT don't do editing. I want to do the editing part. searching for someone to help me redo my website. especially need help with accessibility, seo and general organizational help. I've got a lot going on and I need someone clear minded to help. At a modest budget no less. researching platforms for my non-editing services. I'm starting with podcast audits created for my Podcast Review Day community but others are paying attention. I can't lie, it's nice. I'm getting paid to listen to podcasts. Wow.
Would love to know what PD you're doing. Hit REPLY to this email and let me know.
