READER FEEDBACK:
In the last newsletter, #24, I mentioned that Audacity had a silence remover and wondered what other DAWs did as well. Podcast Editor Rachel Hanson, replied and said "Adobe Audition also has the ability to eliminate silences, even ones of a specific length :)." Thanks Rachel! I have a feeling that I may be back to dabbling (or diving) in Audition in 2022. Just need to get past the geographical musical chairs that is my Fall.
BUSINESS:
Finding clients/work: How many free events, calls, etc is enough?
This is more of a thinky moment than a tip, maybe. How many calls do you take before you start charging a consultation fee? How many free promotional events do you do where you could (but probably won't) find clients? I spent the first 3 years of my podcasting life with a day job, so didn't even offer services until last year. So I met heaps of people and shared what I knew freely. But now that my business is growing and more people are wanting to "pick my brain" I find myself timestrapped. So I'm building a consultation page for my website and will use that to slow down iffy calls. I never want to cut off random chats about podcasting entirely but something has got to change. So here goes. Very curious when this moment was for you and how you balance it.
Building community: WAM: Women Audio Mission.
Men, don't stop reading. Getting more women into audio is NOT just for women to pay attention to or help with.

RECORDING: Gain and other preproduction checklist items
I've been working/playing by ear for a long time. That's how I've recorded my podcast episodes and it's worked out okay most of the time. And then there are big mistakes. But as I change and grow I find myself wanting to know the terminology and lists, oh I love lists, of best practices. So do you happen to have a list, a video or something that explains what you should check on your DAW visually as you're testing the audio before recording. Thanks.
CONTENT EDITING: Emotions IN Audio
TLDR:
It's so refreshing to express myself in my podcasting business life AND to have a hand in encouraging others to do also. Longer read:I explain more in this LinkedIn post and include a photo from my language teaching days cause, well, you'll have to read to understand how! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/dstephfuccio_creative-language-teaching-activity-6834177270207303681-qMUY/A coincidental blog post from Austin Kleon on emotions:https://austinkleon.com/2021/08/12/what-to-do-with-your-feelings/
DAW DISCOVERIES: Audacity & Sound Effects
I had one of those conversations last night with Motzie and Reg of the Hi Nay podcast. A conversation that could have gone on for ages. They claim that they're not "professional" because they didn't go to school for audio work. BAH, I say.
Anyway, we recorded a Simple Podcast Editing video podcast that will be out a bit later this month. I don't want to spoil the tip but it's about sound design and is really funny and clever. Ohhhh, you're gonna like this one. Be sure to subscribe/follow our podcast and/or YouTube channel so you don't miss it when it comes out. And in the meantime, go listen to their podcast cause it's sheer excellence in audio and in story!
DAW TIMESAVER: making alternative versions in Logic Pro X
I'm writing this before we record, which I never ever do but I'm excited. King Kur of the Black History Buff Podcast is going to record an episode for Simple Podcast Editing where he's showing us how to make alternative versions of a project in Logic Pro. He swears it saves heaps of time. And he's super clever and audio talented, so it's gotta be true! Expect that episode in September too.

DAW BRILLIANCE: using a game as an editing tool
Many of you may know the super talented Karim from the Podcast Editors Club/Podcast Editors Academy and on Clean Cut Audiophiles Discord group and probably other places. Well, recently he shares that he set up his gaming console to be his editing tool. He said that this video was his inspiration to do it.
So instead of using a traditional keyboard, he's able to press a key on the game console to do that action. Since there are less buttons on the console than a keyboard he also used the shift key on the back of the console to make all the buttons do double duty. He's promised that he'll do a proper write up of how he did it soon. For now, he's offered to answer emails if anyone tries it and has questions: karim@mostadigital.com. How amazing is this idea!
SOUND CONSIDERATIONS: Compression Meditation
I'm addicted to The House of Kush YouTube channel with Gregory Scott. A lot of what he says goes over my head right now but the way he plays with audio and talks about it is really relaxing. My latest favorite is this video on compression. He's using music not conversational podcasts for this experience but there's still plenty that I got from it. He plays the original piece (2:42) and then goes through and changes it (while showing the dials) and telling you what he's done and why. Even though he shows the knobs, I say ignore those for now. Listen to the differences. I think this audio experience can really help us understand what compression is doing in our DAWs in a way that regular tutorials can not.
COMMUNITY: Podcast listening
I'm a firm believer that you need to consume what you make. And it's also good to have a community to talk about it. With that in mind, here's a new article I wrote for Discover Pods on podcast listening communities that will expand your podcast listening experience: https://discoverpods.com/want-to-talk-about-podcasts-try-a-listening-community/
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Hiatus
